Projected Summit Date : June 9th, 2013

Route : Machame 7 Day

Home Town : Green Oaks, IL

Climbing For : Mailisita Foundation

Jambo! My name is Jonathan Grote. I wholeheartedly accept the Mailisita Foundation’s Kilimanjaro Challenge. The Kilimanjaro Challenge will raise funds that will be used to complete construction of the Stella Maris School and guesthouse. The Stella Maris School is a high quality primary school which educates about 300 orphaned and underprivileged children in a Tanzanian village six miles outside of Moshi called Mailisita. The Stella Maris Guesthouse is on track to make the entire project self-sustaining. Since I’m funding the climb, 100% of any donations will go to the Foundation to support the project and are fully tax deductible.

I’m an organic chemist, father of a boy and a girl, and after 56 years still a lover of the outdoors. My wife Betty and I volunteered in the PADS (Public Assistance to Deliver Shelter) program for many years. I’ve worked on several Habitat for Humanity projects.  I’ve also been active in scouting for over ten years, starting as a Cub Scout Den Leader for six first grade boys, and most recently acting as the Commissioner for scouting units in Libertyville. Scouting is about helping others and was a natural extension of my desire to contribute. It’s been lots of fun helping boys to mature and become active participants of society. Scout units I’ve headed have started working with the PADS, Adopt-a-Highway, and Keep Libertyville Beautiful programs, among others.

It was through scouting that I met the chairman of the Mailisita Foundation (Stan Taylor), a fellow father in my pack. Not surprisingly, the Stella Maris School and the Stella Maris Guesthouse have long been topics of our conversations. Father Val has also been a great source of inspiration and encouragement about getting involved with this project.

Ever since we first made a financial commitment for construction of the Stella Maris School and Guesthouse, we’ve been receiving updates.  Immediately, we fell in love with the children, who have so many hardships to deal with at such a young age, including living in extreme poverty without one or both of their parents, hunger, and a variety of health issues. Since the project began, I've seen changes through the progress reports: the look of excitement in the children’s eyes and a smile on their faces as they come to school to learn and grow.  They are always excited to see volunteers, whether they are working on the school, finishing the guesthouse, or just simply spending time with them on the playground or helping with their studies. Everyone who has visited the project has been touched by their smiling faces and unconditional love. I’m happy to support this project and help God’s children. Please consider the great benefit you will provide by making a generous contribution to help these beautiful children.

Help Jonathan reach his goal of raising $5,000 for the Mailista Foundation.

100% of funds raised go directly to the Mailista Foundation.  All travel and climb expenses have been paid for by Jonathan.
