Maasai Market, Nairobi

If you are looking for Maasai jewelry, wood carvings, woven baskets, or traditional tinga paintings the Maasai Market is the perfect stop.  Founded in the 90’s by a group of Maasai women, the market was located downtown.  However, the city council was constantly changing the location of the market and eventually pushed the group into other neighborhoods.   Now there are several locations of the Maasai Market depending on which day of the week.  When shopping at the market it is important to bargain.  In most cases the 1st price that you are given is 2 or 3 times what the acceptable price will be.

The markets typically start around 9 and run until the early afternoon (3ish).  It is best to check with your accommodation or guide to find out when and where the Maasai Market is.
