Marangu 6 Day Trek

8 Days  /  7 Nights  Full Board

Day 1 : A Warm Welcome To Tanzania

Accommodation: Stella Maris Lodge

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed to Tanzania by a member of the E-Trip Africa team and then you will be chauffeured to your Moshi hotel.  After dinner you will have a full briefing with you lead guide.

Day 2 :

Accommodation: Mandara Hut

After a hearty breakfast and a final kit check, you are then transferred to the Marangu Gate where your trek will start.  We will trek through farmland and then into dense montane forest, which is often a good place to see birds, primates, and other forest wildlife.  We reach the Mandara Hut located in a forest clearing in the afternoon.

Day 3 :

Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Our trek continues through the forest to the base of the Maundi Crater.  Most trekkers opt for the optional detour to the rim of the crater to catch a first close glimpse of Kibo, the youngest and highest of the three volcanoes that form the entire mountain.  We continue through the grassy moorland to reach the Horombo Hut by mid afternoon.

Day 4 :

Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Today we will work on acclimatizing our bodies.  We head north towards Mawenzi, passing the Zebra Rocks and crossing the alpine desert to Mawenzi Hut (14,160ft) before returning to Horombo Hut for dinner.

Day 5:

Accommodation: Kibo Hut Camp

Today we set out across the alpine desert, through the Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks.  We now are well into the highland desert, which is very barren and open to extreme conditions.  After reaching the Kibo Hut we dine and retire early in order to get some rest before the summit attempt.

Day 6 : Summit

Accommodation: Horombo Hut

We start our summit attempt around midnight.  We plod very slowly in the darkness and cold on a switchback trail through loose volcanic scree to reach the Crater rim at Gillman’s Point (18,651 ft).  We rest there for a short time to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi.  We then continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (19,342 ft), the highest point in Africa.  After spending a few precious moments to enjoy your accomplishment and the views from Uhuru, we start our descent.  We will stop a Kibo Hut for some refreshments and rest before we continue our descending to Horombo Hut.

Day 7:

Accommodation: Stella Maris Lodge

A sustained descent with wide views across the moorland takes us to the lovely forest around Mandara.  We continue through semi-tropical vegetation to the Marangue gate where your vehicle will be waiting to take you to your accommodations in Moshi.  After bidding farewell to the mountain, it is time to thank the crew that helped you along the journey.  A well earned dinner, hot shower, and good night’s sleep await you at the Stella Maris Lodge in Moshi.

Day 8:

After a relaxing breakfast a vehicle is available to transfer you to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport, or you may connect with other itineraries.
