Rongai 7 Day Trek

9 Days  /  8 Nights  Full Board

Day 1 : A Warm Welcome To Tanzania

Accommodation: Stella Maris Lodge

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed to Tanzania by a member of the E-Trip Africa team and then you will be chauffeured to your Moshi hotel.  After dinner you will have a full briefing with you lead guide.

Day 2 :

Accommodation: Rongai Cave

After a hearty breakfast and a final kit check, you are then transferred to the Northern side of Kilimanjaro where your trek will start.  We will trek through farmland and pine plantations with chances to catch a glimpse of the wide variety of wildlife.  The gentle climb continues to the Rongai Cave at the edge of the moorland zone.

Day 3 :

Accommodation:  Second Cave*

Our trek continues with a steady ascent up to the Second Cave.  Today we experience superb views of the Eastern Icefields on the rim of Kibo, the youngest and highest of the three volcanoes that form the entire mountain.

Day 4 :

Accommodation: Kikelewa Caves

We leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller trail towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi, the second of Kilimanjaro’s Volcanoes.  Our campsite is sheltered in a valley near the Kikelewa Caves.

Day 5 :

Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn

A steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb panoramas of the Kenyan plains to the North.  We leave vegetation behind close to Mawenzi Tarn, spectacularly situated in a cirque beneath the towering cliffs of Mawenzi.  The afternoon is free to rest or to explore the surrounding areas as an aid to acclimatization.

Day 6 :

Accommodation: Kibo Hut Camp

We leave our attractive campsite to cross the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo.  We will reach our campsite at the bottom of the Kibo Crater Wall by early afternoon.  The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the summit attempt.

Day 7 : Summit

Accommodation: Horombo Hut Camp

We start our summit attempt around midnight.  We plod very slowly in the darkness and cold on a switchback trail through loose volcanic scree to reach the Crater rim at Gillman’s Point (18,651 ft).  We rest there for a short time to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi.  We then continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft), the highest point in Africa.  After spending a few precious moments to enjoy your accomplishment and the views from Uhuru, we start our descent.  We will stop a Kibo Hut for some refreshments and rest before we continue our descending to Horombo Camp.

Day 8 :

Accommodation: Stella Maris Lodge

A sustained descent with wide views across the moorland takes us to the lovely forest around Mandara.  We continue through semi-tropical vegetation to the Marangue gate where your vehicle will be waiting to take you to your accommodations in Moshi.  After bidding farewell to the mountain, it is time to thank the crew that helped you along the journey.  A well earned dinner, hot shower, and good night’s sleep await you at the Stella Maris Lodge in Moshi.

Day 9 :

After a relaxing breakfast a vehicle is available to transfer you to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport, or you may connect with other itineraries.

*Note:  This route may be modified.  It is common to continue to Kikelewa Cave Camp on Day 3 and then spend an extra night at Mawenzi Tarn Camp.  The guide will suggest the best option depending on the abilities of the climbers in the group.
